AboutΒ MEN4DEM
The rise of far-right parties in Europe poses a serious challenge to liberal democracy, as ideas that were once considered extreme are becoming part of the mainstream. These movements often undermine democratic principles, such as protecting minority rights, maintaining the separation of powers, and upholding the rule of law. They promote inequality, encourage authoritarianism, and threaten personal freedoms by normalizing harassment, intimidation, and violence.
Back to "traditional" gender roles
Far-right ideologies are frequently linked to xenophobia, racism, antisemitism, misogyny, homophobia, transphobia, and broader hostility toward marginalized groups. They often glorify so-called "traditional" gender roles and promote hyper-masculine ideals that celebrate gender inequality, diminish democratic values, and excuse authoritarian behavior. This trend represents a direct threat to the inclusive and pluralistic foundations of European democracy.
Extremist Narratives
MEN4DEM seeks to deepen the understanding of how the far right in Europe constructs and promotes certain ideas of masculinity. Using an intersectional perspective and a mix of research methods, the project will analyze how these extremist narratives are spread online and how they influence mainstream politics. The findings will help develop evidence-based strategies to challenge harmful forms of political masculinity that undermine the European Union's core values of equality, democracy, and inclusion.
Building Inclusive Politics Through Democratic Masculinities
Working closely with young men, civil society partners, and a European network of gender justice organizations, MEN4DEM will co-create practical interventions that promote healthier, democratic models of masculinity. These efforts aim to support fairer political participation, representation, and leadership across the EU.
The project will deliver concrete tools for policymakers, practitioners, civil society groups, and political parties to build a safer, more inclusive political environment for everyone. MEN4DEM brings together experts and organizations from Germany, Greece, Italy, the Netherlands, Poland, Sweden, and across Europe to develop solutions that strengthen democracy and gender equality.
